Let's Get Funked Up!

Bootsy's Rubber Band- 'Stretchin' Out' 1976
1) Stretchin' Out (In A Rubber Band)
2) Psychoticbumpschool
3) Another Point Of View
4) I'd Rather Be With You
5) Love Vibes
6) Psychical Love
7) Vanish In Our Sleep

Bootsy Fuckin' Collins. To be fair, I could leave the bullshit blurb there and that would say it all, but my desire to waffle aimlessly to the void of emptiness would not be sated....and that just won't do.
This. Is. Funk. If those three words don't get you reaching for the 'fro comb, flairs and star shades then step away from the vehicle and put your hands on the bonnet! This is Bootsy's first 'solo' album, the first in which he was able to forge a complete album of his own unique brand of P Funk, having previously cut his teeth with James Brown and the daddy of funk, George Clinton. Granted, there are some of Bootsy's trade mark humorous banter on the album, but if you were to strip that all away (but why would you?) it's pure, unadulterated funk.
Bootsy's bass sound is as unique and distinctive any of the guitar gods you could care to mention. His voice may be....an acquired taste but his quirky, goofy and colourful approach is to 70s funk what Snoop Dogg was to 90s gangta rap; for all their amusing eccentricities neither are novelty acts and neither should ever be dismissed.

Though all of Bootsy's late 70 releases are well worth owning, this is his most consistent, funky and essential offering. Even if only to check out the utterly brilliant, truly genius I'd Rather Be With You (I can't praise this track enough!) you must give this a spin.
May the funk be with you...

  1. haha. it's cool. but seriously: "The paradox is the more I download the less I listen to music, but the more I listen the more I want to possess it." that EXACTLY describes my current situation. i didn't know people like me existed. i mean, of course i assumed, but it's just weird to meet someone suffering from the same ailment/gift as myself. haha.

i usually just try as hard as i can to diversify my library, listen to as much as one can, and never stop downloading. i know so many (musically) closed-minded people. i feel that an insanely eclectic and just plain good collection will naturally lead to open-mindedness. the larger your library, the more it tends to vary and diversify. aside from a simple/complex love of music in itself, i suppose that is driving force behind my downloading.

i'm so pumped for the mastodon album myself. i'll look for some of those things that you wants.

  2. as a huge fan of metal: well i listened to a few rough rips of "crack in the skye". i don't quite know how i'll feel about an entire album of clean vocals, but the instrumentals are just... so very good. why the fuck have people been hating on it so bad? and in the same breath (or paragraph) they'll say leviathan sucked as well? fuck that shit. mastodon is and surely always will be amazing, especially for doing the opener for the aqua teen hunger force colon movie film for theatres. that shit was amazing.

as a huge fan of funk: bootsy fuckin' collins.

  3. Nothing annoys me more than musical snobbery or closed mindedness. As you said, having a diverse collection of music, as much as you can get is the way forward.
What does get me the most is people who will straight up disregard a band/album/genre base on some half baked preconception that they've probably picked up from someone else. If you listen to a certain album and don't like it, fine, just give things a fair chance.

Mostly I'm a metal fan too but I made a point about 10 years ago to broaden my musical horizons. I still love metal but I've also found an appreciation for Funk, Jazz, Blues etc etc. I don't care what genre it's lumped into, if I like it, I like it, simple as.

Also, cheers for the comments, they are much appreciated. Makes me feel there are actually people out there and that this isn't a complete waste of my time :)

  4. "HALLELUIAH!!"
*LOVE* THIS ALBUM - THANK YOU!!;-)
You guys both have it RIGHTON, as far as collecting/listening to Music goes, as far as I'm concerned - I'm in the same exact boat! Strangely enuff, it's frustrating as Hell to me how much unbelievably fine music is out there for the taking (I guess along the same lines as "so many good books (or *babes*?-)), so little time"...)if only in the sense that you know you'll *never* get around to checking it *all* out. But, then again, maybe you don't really need to, as long as you're having fun. I mean - what more do you really need than *that*? In the meantime, I'm with you; Good is Good, period. Details like labels are *totally* irrelevant. Besides, how the fuck can you "judge" Art?! It's always just a matter of personal taste, right? Who, exactly, is "the Final Authority"? (!) And the more open you are, the more satisfied and expanded you *will* be.
You sound like you both know your way around the net - any idea where I might find
*Relocation (1977) by XIT, *Heavy Mental by the Fools, or a good (higher than 128) copy of *Seventy Second Brave by Keef Hartley? THANKS AGAIN and KEEP THE FAITH!!;-)
